Using Search Tags in Nova Search

Modified on Mon, 18 Aug at 6:16 PM

Nova Search now supports Search Tags, a quick way to tell the search engine exactly where you want to look. Instead of clicking through tabs, you can simply type a tag at the beginning of your search query.

For example, typing

-n breaking news

will instantly show you results from News instead of the general web.

Supported Search Tags

Here’s the full list of available tags and what they do:

  • -w or -web → Search the Web only

  • -n or -news → Search News only

  • -i, -img, or -images → Search for Images only

  • -v, -video, or -videos → Search for Videos only

  • -map or -maps → Search Maps only

  • -m, -mixed, or -all → Search across all types (default — no need to use a tag unless you want to)

  • -nova → Search Nova Central (apps, docs, gists, and more within Nova Suite) (only available when you login)

Tips & Notes

  • Tags must go at the very beginning of your search.

    • Example:

      -maps coffee shops near me
  • If you don’t add a tag, Nova Search defaults to the All tab, showing a blend of results across all categories.

  • All tags overlap with the tabs you already see at the top of Nova Search, tags are just a faster way to jump directly where you want.

Why Use Tags?

Search Tags are designed for speed. If you already know the type of result you want, you can skip extra clicks and get there instantly. It’s especially useful for power users, but simple enough for anyone to use.
